Loading Brushes into Photoshop

You may install the brushes to any folder.
I like to keep my brushes in a subdirectory of Photoshop in a folder named brushes.

From the Brushes Palette in Photoshop, click the small arrow in the upper right corner of the palette, and choose load brushes.
Locate the directory where you have stored the brushes (.abr files) and select the file you want and click "load".
The brushes will be added to the current brushes.

What are BIN Files ?

* BIN files are one of CD/DVD image formats.

* BIN file is a binary copy of an entire CDs/DVDs disc.

* BIN file contain all the data stored on the original disc including not only its files and folders but also its system-specifics information.

* BIN image file is not a collection of files or folders but is an exact duplicate of the raw data of the original disc, sector by sector.

How to open BIN Files ?

* BIN file is supplied by CUE file. Ex. Xyz.bin , Xyz.cue

* CUE file can be opened by using Notepad. Then you will get the information like this.

FILE "Xyz.bin" BINARY
TRACK 01 MODE1/2352
INDEX 01 00:00:00

* If you get information like above, Next open Nero StartSmart . Go to Copy and Backup on top as shown in the figure.

* Then click on ‘Burn Image to Disc’.

* Burn CUE file only ( Don’t select BIN file )

Your new CD is ready with all files that is available in BIN file.

The above procedure works for .iso files also.

Hide Data in notepad

It is a pretty unknown trick to create hidden text files using nothing but Notepad, you can use this simple trick to hide plain text data without using any third-party utility.The text files created using the method below won't show anywhere in DOS or Windows irrespective of the hidden and system display file-settings, the files created using this can only be accessed if you know the correct file-name used while creating the file.Follow the steps :

Launch Windows command prompt from Start Menu -> Run -> Type cmd and press Enter.

Using DOS commands navigate to the desired folder.

Now type in notepad VisibleFile.txt:HiddenFile.txt and hit Enter, you can
change VisibleFile.txt and HiddenFile.txt to names of your choice (notice the : between both file-names), You will be prompted to Create a New file click Yes.

Now enter data you want to hide, save the file and close notepad.

Visit the file-save location, you will see your VisibleFile.txt file (non-hidden) there, you can open the file and enter any text of your choice as any other normal text file.

The hidden file HiddenFile.txt will not be visible under Windows Explorer or DOS.

To open and read/write your hidden file, type in the command notepad VisibleFile.txt:HiddenFile.txt (change filenames with your own used during Step 3 above) at DOS command prompt and hit Enter.

Note : If the visible file (VisibleFile.txt) is deleted your hidden file (HiddenFile.txt) will also get deleted.

The name Blu-ray Disc is derived from the blue-violet laser used to read and write this type of disc. Because of its shorter wavelength (405 nm), substantially more data can be stored on a Blu-ray Disc than on the DVD format, which uses a red, 650 nm laser. A single layer Blu-ray Disc can store 25 GB, over 5 times the size of a single layer DVD at 4.7GB. A dual layer Blu-ray Disc can store 50 GB, almost 6 times the size of a dual layer DVD at 8.5GB.

Blu-ray Disc is similar to PDD, another optical disc format developed by Sony (which has been available since 2004) but offering higher data transfer speeds. PDD was not intended for home video use and was aimed at business data archiving and backup.

Optical Disc Recorder..[ODR]
A CD recorder is a compact disc drive that can be used to produce discs readable in other CD-ROM drives and audio CD players.

A DVD recorder produces DVD discs playable in stand-alone video players or DVD-ROM drives. ("DVD recorder" may also refer not just to the drive unit, but also to consumer set-top devices which record video onto DVD media.)

A Blu-ray disc recorder produces BD discs playable in BD-ROM drives.

Optical disc recorders are generally used for small-scale archival or data exchange, being slower and more materially expensive than the moulding process used to mass-manufacture pressed discs. Nevertheless, they (along with flash memory) have displaced floppy disks and magnetic tape in most cases because of the low cost of optical media and the near-ubiquity of optical drives in computers and consumer entertainment hardware.

Hard Coating Technology!
Because the Blu-ray Disc standard places the data recording layer close to the surface of the disc, early discs were susceptible to contamination and scratches and had to be enclosed in plastic caddies for protection. The consortium worried that such an inconvenience would hurt Blu-ray Disc's market adoption. Blu-ray Discs now use a layer of protective material on the surface through which the data is read.

The recent introduction of a clear polymer coating has given Blu-ray Discs substantial scratch resistance. The coating is developed by TDK and is called "Durabis". It allows BDs to be cleaned safely with only a tissue. The coating is said to successfully resist "wire wool scrubbing" according to Samsung Optical technical manager Chas Kalsi. It is not clear, however, whether discs will use the Durabis coating as standard or only in premium discs.

Both Sony and Panasonic replication methods include proprietary hard-coat technologies. Sony's rewritable media are sprayed with a scratch-resistant and antistatic coating. Verbatim recordable and rewritable Blu-ray Disc discs use their own proprietary hard-coat technology called ScratchGuard

Anywhere and Anytime Exercises

These type of Exercises generally makes your body strong and firm. No matter, you are Exercising or Muscle Building or Body Building, these exercises are quite handy and help a lot.

Here are few Anytime and Anywhere Exercises:-

a) Crunch

Lie down on the floor on your back with your feet up on the couch or something. Give support to your neck with the help of cushion. Place your buttocks as near as possible to the couch. Lock your elbows. Now slowly raise your head off the ground just a few inches. Hold on to the raised position for 2 secs and then slowly come down.

Repeat this exercise 20 times to make one set.It will really build your abs and you will feel it.

b) Raising your Toes and then coming down.

Stand on a floor flatfooted with toes pointing straight.Hold onto something to balance yourself. Now VERY SLOWLY, raise your toes as high as possible. Hold on for 2 secs and come down very gently and slowly. Repeat it 20 times to make one set.

c) Push ups

Lie down on the floor facing towards the floor with your body weight on your palms.Now slowly , push your body up keeping your back straight and facing right ahead. Hold onto 2 secs and then slowly bring your body back to the starting position.

Repeat it 5-10 times in the beginning and then try to practice this exercise 20 times per set.

d) Wall Squat

Stand straight with your back against the wall. Now, gently move your body down to the sitting position. Make sure your back is still against the wall.Hold on to 15 secs and then gently move up keeping your back against the wall again.

Repeat it 5-10 times in the beginning and then try to practice this exercise 20 times per set.

Even if your display isn't large enough to show more lines, you can still have a DOS box that can have much more virtual lines, so that you can scroll up to view the results of a long operation, for example.

Open a DOS box as usual (for example, select "Programs | DOS box / Command Prompt" from the "Start menu"
Right click on its title bar and select "Properties..."
Change to the Layout tab
Change the Height parameter under Screen Buffer Size group to the number of virtual lines you'd like to have in your DOS box.
Click "OK"
Select a way to save the recent changes, if you get a "Apply Properties to Shortcut" or similar prompt.

This is a great trick you can play on your friends. To disable the display of local or networked drives when you click My Computer.

1.Go to start->run.Type regedit.
Now go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Win

dows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Now in the right pane
create a new DWORD item and name it NoDrives (it is case sensitive).
Now modify it's value and set it to 3FFFFFF (Hexadecimal) .
Now restart your Computer.
So, now when you click on My Computer, no drives will be shown(all gone...).

To enable display of drives in My Computer, simply delete this DWORD item that you created.Again restart your Computer.You can now see all the drives again. Magic........lol.

Joystick port is not working To troubleshoot, check the following:
1.The audio card joystick port conflicts with another joystick port in the system. Disable the audio card joystick port, and use the system’s joystick port.
2.The joystick drivers, MSJSTICK.DRV and VJOYD.VXD, may not be installed. Uninstall the joystick, then reinstall to load the drivers. The drivers should come with the driver CD or floppy diskette with your sound card.

Apple HFS/HFS+ is the "Hierarchical File system", the native volume format used on modern Macintosh computers. with HFS/HFS+ volume format, CD and DVD can be readable on Mac OS. UDF (Universal Disk Format) is a file system developed by OSTA. With UDF volume format, data can be written to a CD or DVD in the same way as to a hard disk or floppy disk.

Once you have selected your settings, Click Ok to apply.
Change the root name you can give your CD or DVD and overtype the default name. you can use letter A-Z, digits 0-9 and the underscore character(_).
If File Browser Panel is not open yet, you can open it by clicking button.
Add files and folders for the CD and DVD using Drag&Drop editing by simply clicking on the required files in the file browser and dragging them into the compilation panel.

You also can select files and folders in the file browser and add files and folders for the CD and DVD by clicking button.

When adding directories, the directory structure is moved across too, i.e. if you drag an entire folder into the compilation panel, the folder will be created on the CD you wish to burn.

If you drag a lot of individual files however this may affect the clarity of the CD's contents. To avoid this you can create new folders within the compilation panel by clicking button. The folder you have just created is assigned the name "New Folder" by default and can be renamed immediately.
Click to open the burn dialog box.
Choose your CD/DVD recorder, Choose write speed. Important: you must remember to clear the "Finalize CD" checkbox when creating the first session of a MultiSession CD or DVD. Purpose

The purpose of this software is to controller the temperature of industry equipments, rooms, boiler, electric generators, steam turbines, combustion engine etc. This project is specifically designed to maintain the temperature of the room by controlling Electric Fan and Electric Bulb or Heater.

Working

This software will continuously monitor the temperature of room (Ambient Temperature). If the ambient temperature increases above the desired temperature level then the software will switch on the Electric Fan. On the other hand if the ambient temperature decreases below the desired level then the software will switch on the Electric Heater or Bulbs and switch off Electric Fan. If the ambient temperature is equal to the desired temperature level then the software will switch off both Electric Fan and Heater.

First of all I have designed the hardware. The components that I have used and the circuit diagram is shown below.

The Software Side

The software is created in Turbo Basic. The software reads the data from the Standard Parallel port shown above from pin No. 2 to 9. It processes the input data and then compares it with the user desired temperature entered by the user.

The picture shown above all is the first animated window that appears when the user runs the software. Then the software directs the user to enter the temperature he wants to maintain. Afterwards the software starts monitoring the temperature. The window that appears next is shown below.

This window remains there until you press Esc key. With the help of this software you can enter desired temperature that falls in the range from 0 to 105°C.

XP Hibernate Option

Whenever you want to logoff, shut down or reboot your Windows XP machine you have only 3 choices
(1) Standby ONLY IF the ACPI/APM function is properly enabled BOTH in your motherboard's BIOS AND in WinXP!
(2) Restart
(3) Shutdown.

To properly enable Hibernation in WinXP:

Start button -> Control Panel -> Power Options -> Hibernate tab -> check Enable hibernate support box -> Apply/OK -> reboot.

NOTE: If the Hibernate tab is unavailable your computer does NOT support it!
For some reason Microsoft did NOT enable the 4th option:
(4) Hibernate, which should be available on power saving (ACPI) enabled PCs and laptops.
But you CAN bring it back: just hold the Shift key while the Shut down menu is displayed on your screen, and notice the Standby button being replaced by a new, fully functional Hibernate button, which can be clicked with the left button of your mouse.

If you release the Shift key, the Hibernate option will disappear once again, to be replaced by Standby.

How to create a boot disk

This is quite simple.
1: Go into MY COMPUTER
2: Have a floppy disk in your drive and then RIGHT click on on the floppy drive and then click on FORMAT
3: You will be greeted with a number of options. The one you need to select is "Create an MS-DOS start up disk".
4: Click ok

Note: This requires up to 5 floppy disks and DOES NOT contain ANY CD-ROM drivers to boot from. A proper CD-ROM boot up disk is going to be release by Microsoft after the Windows XP public release. You can however use you old Windows Me start-up disk if you would prefer, as long as you have not upgraded to an NTFS drive.

How To Enable Hibernation

Under Windows 98, Me, or 2000 there was an option in the shutdown dialog box to enter the computer into hibernation (where all the content of the RAM is copied to the hard disk). The shutdown dialog box of Windows XP doesn't offer any longer the hibernation button. Some users may get confused about how to enable the hibernation mode. If this mode is supported by your motherboard (ACPI) you have to do the following:

Click Start and Shut Down,
Point the standby button and maintain the shift key pushed,
A new hibernation button appears: click it while still holding the shift key: voila your PC will hibernate.

Boot Defragment

A very important new feature in Microsoft Windows XP is the ability to do a boot defragment. This basically means that all boot files are placed next to each other on the disk drive to allow for faster booting. By default this option is enabled but some upgrade users have reported that it isn't on their setup.

1. Start Regedit.
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction
3. Select Enable from the list on the right.
4. Right on it and select Modify.
5. Change the value to Y to enable and N to disable.
6. Reboot your computer.

Search for Hidden or System Files By default, the Search companion does not search for hidden or system files. Because of this, you may be unable to find files, even though they exist on the drive.

To search for hidden or system files in Windows XP:
Click Start, click Search, click All files and folders, and then click More advanced options.

Click to select the Search system folders and Search hidden files and folders check boxes.

NOTE: You do not need to configure your computer to show hidden files in the Folder Options dialog box in Windows Explorer to find files with either the hidden or system attributes, but you need to configure your computer not to hide protected operating system files to find files with both the hidden and system attributes. Set Permissions for Shared Files and Folders

Sharing of files and folders can be managed in two ways. If you chose simplified file sharing, your folders can be shared with everyone on your network or workgroup, or you can make your folders private. (This is how folders are shared in Windows 2000.) However, in Windows XP Professional, you can also set folder permissions for specific users or groups. To do this, you must first change the default setting, which is simple file sharing. To change this setting, follow these steps:
•Open Control Panel, click Tools, and then click Folder Options.
•Click the View tab, and scroll to the bottom of the Advanced Settings list.
•Clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box.
•To manage folder permissions, browse to the folder in Windows Explorer, right–click the folder, and then click Properties. Click the Security tab, and assign permissions, such as Full Control, Modify, Read, and/or Write, to specific users.

You can set file and folder permissions only on drives formatted to use NTFS, and you must be the owner or have been granted permission to do so by the owner.

The PowerToys are installed into the directory you specify during setup. Typically this is the system32 directory.

To uninstall the PowerToys, Open the control Panel. Launch the Add/Remove Programs control panel applet. Find the PowerToys for Windows XP entry, and choose Modify/Remove. From here you can remove specific toys or all of them.

Faster User Switcher
Note: You cannot use this toy if fast user switching is not enabled.

What it is: With Fast User Switching enabled on Windows XP, this PowerToy allows you to switch users without having to use the logon screen.
Special requirements: This PowerToy requires a Windows key on your keyboard.
How to use: Press the Windows key then the Q key to activate; release and press Q to switch to a different user tile, then release both Q and Windows key to switch to that user.

Shell Player

What it is: Replaces the existing Alt + Tab application switching mechanism of Windows XP. It provides a thumbnail preview of windows in the task list and is compliant with the new Windows XP visual style.
How to use: (NOTE: You must log off and then log on again for the changes to take effect). Use just as you do the existing Alt + Tab mechanism by pressing the Alt key and the Tab key to activate. While holding down the Alt key, press the Tab key to cycle through running applications. To move backwards, press Shift + Alt + Tab. Release all keys when the desired application is highlighted.

Virtual Desktop Manager
What it is: Manage up to 4 desktops from the Windows Shell Taskbar.
How to use:Right click on the taskbar, click toolbars, then click "Desktop Manager." If the taskbar is locked and you want to resize the manager, you will have to unlock it.

Background Wallpaper switcher
What it is: Allows you to switch the background image periodically.
How to use: Access this PowerToy by right clicking the desktop, click properties. It has added a new tab that will allow you to specify the interval as well as the directory to obtain the images from.

Taskbar Magnifier
What it is: Allows you to magnify part of the screen from the taskbar.
How to use:Right click on the taskbar, click toolbars, then click "Taskbar Magnifier." If the taskbar is locked and you want to resize the magnifier, you will have to unlock it.

Slide Show Wizard
What it is: This wizard helps you create a slide show of your digital pictures. When you're done, you can put your slide show on the Web so that your family and friends can view it.

Events are stored in three log files: Application, Security, and System. These logs can be reviewed and archived.
For our purposes we want the System log. Click on "System" in the left-hand column for a list of events.
Look for a date and time when you weren't home and your computer should have been off.

You can also use this log to see how long someone was on the computer. Just look at the time the computer was turned on and off for that day.

Uninstalling Windows from Command Prompt

One option included in Windows XP is the ability to uninstall XP if you performed an upgrade from Windows 98, 98SE, or Windows Me. The standard method of removing XP is achieved by booting into XP normally and uses the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel. If you are unable to start XP normally, the second option is to load XP in Safe Mode then use the same tool. If you are unable to boot normally or boot into Safe Mode, XP can be removed by uninstalling from a Command Prompt. The procedure is as follows:

Important Note: This procedure is available only if a successful image of the previous operating system was created during the XP upgrade.

Start the computer to Safe Mode with Command Prompt.

At the command prompt, type cd\, and then press ENTER.

Type cd\windows\system32, and then press ENTER.

Type osuninst.exe, and then press ENTER.

On screen instructions will guide you through the uninstall process to revert to the previous operating system.

This procedure can only be performed by users logged on as Administrator or a user with administrative rights.

How to use speakers as Microphones

How it works

What happens is that in a speaker there's a magnet and coil, and a pair of wires connecting it up to something. What is supposed to happen when the device is used for outputting sound that electricity is converted to sound. Electrical output from an amplifier is put into the speaker and turned into sound. However, the process is reversible, so it's possible for the magnet and coil in a speaker to pick up sound in the air and turn it into electrical signals in the wires.

Scope of this idea

Almost anything which is fundamentally a speaker can be retasked this way. Hi-fi speakers in imitation wood cases, speakers scavenged from televisions, huge bass-bins for use at rock concerts, etc. Note that if a device has an integral amplifier like some of the things plugged into computers, it's not "a speaker", so the same logic doesn't apply. To check this, if it's powered rather than driven, it's not "a speaker" in this sense.

How to show this is true

If you take a speaker, for example from a hi-fi music centre, and connect the two wires into an input market "mic" on some device such as a tape recorder, computer, amplifier, etc, then the speaker will act as a microphone and will pick up sound.

Are you trying to block a website on your PC? You need not setup firewall filters to do this. Here is a simple trick to block the site on your system. Although many of you know this, this is for the unknown....

First of all I need to describe about the "Hosts" file

It is a file located in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc , and it contains information about the hosts on your system...

Here are the steps

1. Go to the location C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

2. You will find a file by name "hosts" with no extension.

3. Open that file in "Notepad"

4. Go to the bottom of the page where you could find the following line "127.0.0.1 localhost"

5. Now add another line at the bottom for ex: "127.0.0.1 http://www.xyz.com/ localhost"

6. This line will block the site http://www.xyz.com

The trick behind this

127.0.0.1 is the IP address of local system the so called loop back address... Now when you enter a site the browser will first check the hosts file and then it would go for the DNS service of your ISP.

Now we have added the Ip address of the xyz site as 127.0.0.1, so the browser will assume that 127.0.0.1 is the IP address of the xyz site and will connect to the local host itself and so the websites doesn't get opened...

This is the basic trick to block and we can overcome it very easily.....

It is a project started by IEEE to set standards that enable intercommunication between equipment from a variety of manufacturers. 802.1 is an internetworking standard for compatibility of different LANs and MANs across protocols.
802.2 Logical link control (LLC) is the upper sublayer of the data link layer which is non-architecture-specific, that is remains the same for all IEEE-defined LANs.
Media access control (MAC) is the lower sublayer of the data link layer that contains some distinct modules each carrying proprietary information specific to the LAN product being used. The modules are Ethernet LAN (802.3), Token ring LAN (802.4), Token bus LAN (802.5).

53. Explain Bandwidth
Every line has an upper limit and a lower limit on the frequency of signals it can carry. This limited range is called the bandwidth.

Bit rate is the number of bits transmitted during one second whereas baud rate refers to the number of signal units per second that are required to represent those bits. baud rate = bit rate / N where N is no-of-bits represented by each signal shift.

Routers: They relay packets among multiple interconnected networks (i.e. LANs of different type). They operate in the physical, data link and network layers. They contain software that enable them to determine which of the several possible paths is the best for a particular transmission.
Gateways:
They relay packets among networks that have different protocols (e.g. between a LAN and a WAN). They accept a packet formatted for one protocol and convert it to a packet formatted for another protocol before forwarding it. They operate in all seven layers of the OSI model.

A network in which there are multiple network links between computers to provide multiple paths for data to travel.

Introductory Accounting little interest in me, most likely because I am not very good at numbers, the book was ineffective, and I had little spare time that semester to look into other resources.

A professor who knows me well would likely describe my personal qualities: sweet, down-to-earth, smart, hard-working, and conscientious.
As specific examples of those who did not know me well, my accounts professor considered me smart and respectful, and thought that I must have enjoyed the class a lot, due to my performance.

16. Given the chance, how would you alter your education?
Knowing now what I like the most, I would have used my electives for extra math and psychology classes, since I tend to be well-rounded enough that a variety of classes are unnecessary; my personal reading is diverse enough. I have found that mathematics and psychology are helpful to all career and life paths.

Working for was most enjoyable to me, since I felt like I was significantly contributing to the company, and I enjoyed learning on my own.

I missed about 15 days of college due to the illness. Within 2 weeks, I had recovered reasonably from the illness and thanks to my habit of making notes, which proved very beneficial at the time of exams.

22. Do you or have you in the past experimented with illegal drugs?
No. My only addictions are caffeine and sugar.

No, but I enjoy Shirley Temples quite a bit.

Just follow the following steps and you will be able to login in gmail and orkut with multiple accounts. Through this you will be able to make profiles in your firefox.

Step 1:
Open system properties(by right clicking my computer), choose tab advanced, click to environment variables button. in system variables section, click new. type this information to each textbox.

Step 2:
variable name: moz_no_remote (should be all small letter).

variable value: 1

Step 3:
open firefox icon's properties(from desktop and quick launch). add extension -p to command line(like "c:\program files\mozilla firefox\firefox.exe" -p). press ok.
When you will open firefox it will prompt for profile selection create a profile,open firefox login to orkut open once more use another profile login.

Set your own videos as screensavers

I guess Video Screensavers are NOT just confined to Windows Vista anymore.

So essentially what you can do is - download and install this package from Microsoft Website (You will need to have genuine Windows XP) or from Softpedia (without any WGA checks).

After you install this you can set any video as your Screen Saver.

This software is also not constrained to just playing wmv files as a screensaver in XP but I was also able to play .avi files.

I guess it is using all the codecs available with your Windows Media Player.

This is usefull for those who often use elevators !

When we press the floor no. button on the panel lift start moving. But if someone on the next floor calls the lift the lift stop for them, this could be very irritating in rush hours !

Now, if you Press the Floor No. Button and the Close Door Button both at same time then the elevator would not stop for any one in the way and will stop directly on the destination floor !

** Note in some elevator systems this trick might not work !

How Long Has Your System Been Running?

Here's how you verify system uptime:

Scroll down the list of information to the line that says System Up Time.

Now this is specially for the ones who are too lazy to get up even when the trust cellphone dies screeching its lungs out. Its pretty simple Creating the playlist create a playlist of your favourite songs in Winamp, WMP or any other player. Export the playlist as a M3U playlist. M3U is generally accepted by almost every player. Triggering the alarm point to start> programs >accessories > system tools >scheduled tasks Create a new task and choose program as windows media player or winamp (May work with others too but I haven't tried anything else) Choose "daily", Enter the time and choose "every day" at next screen. It would now ask for password (leave blank in case you don't have one) Right click on the newly created task and check the "run only if logged in" check box. In the properties. Append the path to the playlist you created in the "run" text box. It should now look like Code:

What is the difference between a Virus, Trojan, and Worm?

Basically, they all fall under the generally category of "viruses". However, there are a few distinctions.

Virus - Technically, a virus infects another file (attaches or inserts itself into it). They usually infect program files or MS Office documents. From there, it can replicate, do damage, etc. Unlike a worm, these do not function as a stand alone (except possibly to infect a given file).

Worm - This is almost identical to a "true virus", except that it lives on its own and generally doesn't infect other files (although it can replace them). Usually, these copy themselves using e-mail, networks, disks, etc. Again, these are very close to a true virus, and can do the same kind of damage.

Trojan Horse - This type of program doesn't copy itself but does do damage to your computer. These types of programs rely on people to pass them around and to run them. They do not e-mail themselves. The idea is to make the program look like it's something harmless, like a screen saver or joke, so it gets sent around.

Cannot Access Regedit, How to Fix It?Many times when working on a computer that has been infected with a virus, trojan, or piece of spyware I find myself with my most important command, Regedit, the Windows Registry Editor being disabled. Virus creators like to disable the Registry Editor so it makes solving the problem and removing the issue difficult.

Sometimes administrators in IT departments may place restrictions on using the regedit command to keep employees from changes things on company computers, but viruses and other issues may also try to disable it.

Listed below you will find the different ways to enable regedit, the Registry Editor.

First we'll begin with the method that appears to work the best.

Method 1 - Enabling the Registry with VBScript

Doug Knox, a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional, has created a VBScript that enables or disables the Registry Editor based on the following location in the registry. Of course, since the registry editor is disabled, you can't change it manually, so Doug wrote a Visual Basic Script to accomplish the task.

Visit Doug's page and download Registry Tools VBScript to your desktop, double-click on it to run it, then reboot your computer and try to open the Registry Editor.

If this fix didn't solve your problem, try method two shown below.

Method 2: Use Symantec's tool to reset shell\open\command registry keys

Sometimes worms and trojans will make changes to the shell\open\command registry entries as part of their infections. This will cause the virus to run each time you try to run an .exe file such as the Registry Editor. In these cases, visit Symantec's website and download the UnHookExec.inf file to your desktop. Right-click on it and choose Install. Restart your computer and then try to open the Registry Editor.

Method 3: Rename Regedit.com to Regedit.exe

Some viruses and other malware will load a regedit.com file that is many times a zero byte dummy file. Because .com files have preference over .exe files when executed if you type REGEDIT in the run line, it will run the regedit.com instead of the real regedit.exe file.

Delete the regedit.com file if its a zero byte file to restore access to REGEDIT. In some cases, such as the W32.Navidad worm, you'll need to rename the REGEDIT file to get it to work.

Method 4: Windows XP Professional and Group Policy Editor

If you have Windows XP Professional and access to an administrative user account, you could change the registry editor options in the Group Policy Editor.

How to Disable/Enable the Windows XP Welcome Screen?

Windows XP gives the user a couple ways to log into the computer. You can use the traditional or classic method of typing in the username and password to login or you can use what's called the Welcome Screen to login.
What if you want to change the way your computer logs in, can you disable or enable this Welcome Screen?

The Windows XP Welcome Screen is tied to another feature called "Fast User Switching". This feature lets a user leave all his programs running if another user needs to use the computer. The first user can Log Off the session and Switch User back to the Welcome Screen so that another person can use the computer. When the second person is done, the user can switch back to his profile with all the programs still running where they left off. In order to use this feature, you have to use the Welcome Screen. However, if you dont need or want this feature, follow the instructions below to remove the Welcome Screen.

Remove the Welcome Screen

If you dont want to use "Fast User Switching", you may want to disable the Welcome Screen. You must be logged in as an Administrator to do this. Note:To do this follow the directions below:

1) Click on Start
2) Click on Control Panel
3) Double-click on User Accounts
4) Click on "Change the way users log on or off"
5) Uncheck "Use the Welcome Screen" (note: this will also disable "Fast User Switching")
6) Click on Apply Options
7) Close the User Accounts window and the Control Panel
8) The next time you reboot your computer, the classic login prompt will be used

What if I dont want the Welcome Screen OR the classic prompt? Can I disable both?

To Login automatically to a user account, follow the instructions below:

1) Click on Run
2) Type in the following command and click OK

3) Highlight the user you want to log into automatically, then uncheck the box for

"Users must enter a username and password to use this computer"

4) Click on Apply and you'll be asked to verify the username and password to log in automatically
5) Click OK and the next time you restart your computer, you'll automatically be logged in without having the classic prompt or Welcome Screen.

Is there a utility I can use to accomplish this?

You can download a utility for Windows XP called TweakUI that will allow you to change the way you log into Windows XP, along with allowing you to change alot of other features.

Install Windows Vista from a bootable USB storage device

If you are having problems booting from DVD, or simply want to speed up installation of Windows Vista, there is a way to install Windows Vista using a USB flash drive, or potentially, even a SD memory card.

You should have at least a 2.5GB to 3GB capacity on the USB drive. Its very unusual to see a drive with 3GB capacity sold, so you may want to buy a 4GB with a fast transfer rate.

Installing from a USB device offers the benefit of a faster installation, since DVD-ROM read speeds are significantly slower than USB 2.0, which, at the time of this writing, can reach something close to 20-25 megabytes per second.

What this involves is not only formatting the USB drive to use the FAT32 filesystem, but also copying the entire contents of the Windows Vista DVD-ROM to the USB thumbdrive itself.

INSTRUCTIONS:

STEP 1. Make sure your BIOS is capable of booting from USB

Most new computers are 100% capable of booting from USB device. Sometimes the option is disabled in the computer's BIOS. A more common situation is that when you start up the computer you may have an option to hit F12 to start a Boot Menu, which lets you pick what to boot from. Check to make sure you can in fact boot from USB by trying to access this menu or accessing your BIOS settings.

(Instructions on how to do this should be in your computer's manual or motherboard manual).

STEP 2. Make sure your USB drive partition is set to Primary.

Disks are assigned space using partitions. It is very unlikely that you will need to re-partition or change the partition of the USB drive, as long as the main partition is set to Primary, Active. I'd estimate that this is the case a vast majority of the time. Still, if you would like to quickly confirm that this is a primary partition and that there is only one partition on the USB device, go to:

Type in: compmgmt.msc

Once the Computer Management control opens, go to: Storage, Disk Management. The drive should be listed as active with Primary Partition identified with a blue line going across the graphical representation of the drive. If this is not the case, you can delete the partition by right-clicking and then setting up a new partition with the unallocated space.

STEP 3. Format the USB storage device to use the FAT32 filesystem.

Formatting the drive accomplishes two things. First, most computers are capable of booting from FAT32, but not NTFS. Formatting as FAT32 ensures that you will not be running off FAT, NTFS, or some other file system that your system may not be capable of booting from or may cause problems with the installer.

Second, you will be completely removing all existing data on the drive, which may contain hidden files, temporary files, or system files that could interfere with the Windows Vista installer.

To format the drive, go to:

Select the USB device
Right click and select Format...

Please make sure you have selected the appropriate drive to format!

This is an example only. You need to have over 2.5GB of free space on the drive, not 979 MB.

STEP 4. Copy the entire Windows Vista DVD-ROM to USB thumbdrive

Once you have successfully formatted the USB device, you can now go ahead and copy the entire DVD-ROM to the USB drive. The best method of doing this is not through Windows Explorer, but the Windows command console. There are a number of reasons for this, but a quick explanation is that you want to make sure ALL of the files are copied over.

Follow the following steps:

You will want to run the following:

xcopy [Vista DVD drive letter]:\*.* /s/e/f [USB device drive letter]:\

You must know the drive letter where the Vista installation DVD is located, as well as the drive letter of the USB drive. For example, if the Windows Vista DVD-ROM is in drive D, and the USB device is drive E, you will execute this command:

xcopy d:\*.* /s/e/f e:\

Once you start copying files over, you should not interrupt this process. Once its complete you can close the window. Congratulations, you should now have a copy of the Windows Vista installation on your USB drive.

STEP 5. Install Windows Vista from USB

Remove the Windows Vista DVD from your computer. Access the USB device and run setup.exe. You should see the following:

If you run the installation from within Windows XP, you will be able to do an upgrade installation, but you should now also be able to boot from the USB at start up. This will let you do a clean install of Windows Vista from the USB drive.

To do this restart your computer, access the boot menu when the system post screen appears, and choose 'Boot from USB'. Or access your computer's BIOS and set the first boot device to USB.
